How I Fixed My Laptop When It Refused to Boot – No Tech Guy Needed
Published by: DapperTech • Tech Tips
Imagine waking up to a deadline, powering on your laptop, and boom — black screen. The fan runs, but the screen is just dark. No logo, no light, nothing. That was me one Monday morning, staring at what looked like a dead machine. I almost gave up and called the "system guy" who charges ₦5,000 just to open it up.
What Exactly Happened?
I pressed the power button. Nothing. The fan started, but the screen stayed off. I removed my charger, waited, tried again — nothing. This was my main laptop, the one I use for blogging, coding, and lectures. I needed it back.
First Steps: Check Obvious Stuff
- Unplug everything — charger, mouse, USB devices
- Held down the power button for 30 seconds (to drain static power)
- Removed the battery (if yours is removable)
- Waited 1 minute before plugging it back in
After that? Still nothing. I knew it was time to open it up.
I Went DIY — No Experience Needed
I watched a couple of YouTube videos with similar issues and followed carefully. Here’s what I did:
- Unscrewed the laptop case using a phone repair tool (₦500 from a phone accessories guy)
- Removed and cleaned the RAM sticks with a dry eraser
- Reinserted the RAM, tightly and properly
- Dusted the fan and vents using an old soft brush
The Moment of Truth
I reassembled everything, plugged it in, and pressed the power button. This time, the HP logo popped up. Relief flooded me. I didn’t pay a single kobo, and my laptop was back.
What I Learned
- Static build-up is real – draining it can save your device
- Loose RAM is a common issue in laptops that don’t boot
- Watch and read before panicking
Final Advice
If you’re confident, try the basic fixes before paying anyone. But always be careful — don’t force anything open. If it looks complicated, get help. For simple issues like mine, you can fix it yourself.
